Mixing High Street, Second Hand & Designer Like a Pro

Mixing high street, second-hand, and luxury pieces has always been my favourite way to dress, and fun fact, it’s actually my secret specialty.

I’ve never thought great style comes from wearing head-to-toe designer, and I definitely learnt that from my mother, who has always been my fashion icon and inspiration.

She taught me everything from understanding garment construction and fabric quality to knowing what to look out for while shopping -  all useful tips to know when creating a personal wardrobe that stands the test of time.

I can almost hear her words now: "Only buy it if you can wear it in the next 5 years." 

Because of that, I’ve always felt the most interesting outfits combine different price points, textures, and influences in a way that feels effortless and personal rather than overly curated.

Working in resale fashion has only reinforced that idea. Some of the best outfits I’ve seen mix second-hand denim with a designer bag, or a simple high-street basic styled with a really cool tailored second-hand coat. Most people don’t notice labels first, they notice whether an outfit looks intentional and well put together.

Here’s how I approach mixing high street, second-hand, and luxury pieces in a way that feels elevated rather than overdone, while still staying true to my personal style.

The biggest misconception about creating an expensive looking wardrobe is thinking that everything needs to be from a designer brand. In reality, fit, fabric, and styling matter more than logos.

A well made structured blazer, good quality pair of denim jeans, or a coat that fits just right will always look more elevated than an expensive piece that feels trend driven or poorly made and tailored. 

Personally, I've realised that mixing price points is usually what makes an outfit feel modern and personal. High-street items are perfect for wearable basics and styling that is more trendy, second hand shopping adds individuality and character, which is really important to me and makes second hand shopping fun because you never know what you’ll find, and designer pieces can bring craftsmanship and polish to a look.

The secret is really in the balance. Too much of one thing can start to feel overdone or slightly jarring, but combining different elements creates outfits that feel effortless, authentic and personal.

From working in the resale fashion world, second hand items get overlooked quite often because people focus on the label first, while other items instantly stand out because of the fabric, fit, and overall condition has a premium feeling. A well kept second hand leather jacket can often look much more luxurious than a brand new fast fashion piece that lacks structure and is bad in quality. I also think some people underestimate how important styling and colour palettes are when putting outfits together.

Neutral tones - my personal favourite, good layering and balanced proportions naturally make outfits feel elevated and timeless, which is what you want. Of course, that doesn’t mean that everything has to be plain or minimalist, but having one stand out piece and building your outfit around that creates a more intentional look.

And in actual fact, sometimes all it takes is a well made knit, tailored trousers and accessories that are styled well to make an outfit feel polished without trying too hard. For me, that’s the amazing part of mixing high street, second hand, and luxury pieces.

It gives you the freedom to create a wardrobe that feels authentically you, stylish, and wearable, rather than trendy or overly curated.

Fashion should feel expressive and fun, that’s my motto,and some of the best outfits come from combining items people would never expect to work together. 

So remember, BALANCE. Not overly trendy, overly branded, or like you’re trying too hard. Mixing different textures, silhouettes, and price points creates looks that feel more natural and interesting, and most importantly, they feel like you.

Confidence also plays a huge role, which is something that I am still working on myself. But most importantly, when you feel comfortable and authentic in what you’re wearing, it completely changes the way an outfit can come across.
