Cheverells Lunch for Literacy: Apples, Books and Bright Futures in the heart of Grabouw.

Last week, we took to the valley, nestled among the vineyards and shady trees of Elgin’s very own Cheverells Farm. A venue that welcomed locals, neighbours, and visitors from across the mountain. It was a gathering united by one beautiful purpose: giving.

Celebration of Youth Day

This lunch was held in support of the Ikhwezi Foundation, a pre-school based in the Xolanaledi Township, where many children face challenges that go beyond the classroom. Basic nutrition and hands-on educational care are not guaranteed, yet Ikhwezi steps in to change that. Their tireless work ensures that every child not only has the opportunity to learn but does so with a full tummy, a simple but profound gift that changes the course of their day, and in many ways, their future.

Our attendees (the Vintage Village)  were able to immerse themselves in the very landscapes these children come from, places where many parents work on farms much like Cheverells. The experience was humbling and grounding, a beautiful reminder of how this valley, with its natural abundance, sustains and supports so many communities. From the vineyards that stretch toward the horizon to the quiet nooks beneath the shade of towering trees, every corner seemed to whisper stories of resilience, care, and possibility.

Afternoons like these are nothing short of impactful, but only because of the generosity and warmth of our supporters. We are endlessly grateful for the energy, eagerness, and kindness that our guests brought to every raffle ticket purchased, every auction bid placed, and every conversation shared in the spirit of supporting Ikhwezi’s mission. Together, we raised around R75 000, funds that will go directly toward nutritious meals, learning materials, and the continued care of the children at the school. The tangible difference that each gesture made cannot be overstated.

But it wasn’t just about the fundraising. Adoration, laughter, and smiles were at the heart of this lunch. Stories were exchanged over the table, whether with a familiar face from the valley or a new friend made in the moment. Connections were formed, strengthened, and woven into a tapestry of shared purpose and community. Our lovely friend Bridgette Pickering graced us with her beautiful RuffTung creations, blending fashion and friendship in a way that perfectly mirrors the heart of Vintage with Love.

Of course, we extend our deepest gratitude to Cheverells Farm for opening not only their doors but also their hearts to this cause. Their generosity, hospitality, and stunning setting, paired with a team that made everything run seamlessly, transformed this lunch into an experience that felt like coming home, even for those who had traveled from afar.

As we reflect on this special afternoon, we are reminded that giving comes in many forms: from time spent together, to a smile shared, to a donation that feeds a hungry child or nurtures a curious mind. These gestures ripple outward, leaving lasting impact far beyond the confines of one beautiful valley.

We hope to welcome you to another Lunch for Literacy soon - another opportunity to come together, celebrate community, and continue supporting education in South Africa.

With love,

Lizzy Erwee
