BALANCING MISSION, MONEY, AND MOMENTUM.

Updated: Jun 10

There’s a beautifully romantic idea that purpose alone can change the world - but anyone building a purpose-led organisation knows the reality is far more complex.

At Vintage with Love, or any NPO that's combining charity and commercial strategy, we sit in a constant balancing act between mission, money and momentum - and the truth is, all three matter immensely.

VWL has been founded on the belief that clothes have the power to change the world, and for the past 12 years we’ve seen firsthand what can happen when purchases have purpose. We’re on a mission to change the literacy and education landscape in South Africa - something that so desperately needs our help and our attention.

A sobering reminder that 82% of Grade 4 learners in South Africa cannot read for comprehension ( in their home language) and we quickly need to change that!  Whilst this mission is a fire in all of our bellies, it’s unfortunately not enough to bring about the change we’re desperate for; money and momentum matter too.

There’s often discomfort around talking about money in purpose-led organisations. But without financial sustainability, impact cannot scale.

One of the greatest balancing acts in the NPO space is knowing when to maximise impact today, and when to invest in growth for tomorrow. We’ve worked really hard to build and balance a mix of revenue generating channels; retail stores, online stores, community events and product launches - all of which allow us to chase growth while staying deeply rooted in our mission. The reality is that commercial thinking is needed to fund long term impact.

Growth in an NPO is emotionally complicated because spending money can feel uncomfortable (even when it’s highly necessary) - hiring talent, investing in marketing campaigns, building systems, investing in stores / physical touch points as a few of the very long list of examples. Without these, impact eventually plateaus. We spend an immense amount of time ensuring that where we invest is super intentional - constantly asking ourselves where each expense will create the greatest return on impact.

Momentum - the ability to keep moving forward, faster, better and more inspired. We’ve put a huge amount of effort into building a brand and community that people genuinely want to be part of, because when communities have momentum, they become incredibly powerful. VWL has been built by thousands of people making small decisions consistently: donating a dress, attending an event, shopping second-hand, volunteering their time, sharing our story, introducing us to someone new. Our momentum has been created by a community choosing to participate repeatedly, over and over again.

Second-hand becoming trendy was also not something we were betting on, when founding VWL many moons ago, but it's a shift that has undoubtedly helped create momentum within our cause - and it’s an honour to be at the forefront of that movement in SA. We’re setting out to make 2nd hand the 1st choice and the sustainable shopping movement and circular economy has lent a very welcome helping hand.

Consumers today want their purchases and decisions to stand for something - they want meaning, they want purpose, they want sustainability. The rise of the conscious consumer has been a beautiful addition to VWL’s momentum.

A mission pulls at your heart, money keeps us awake at night, and momentum requires the foot on the accelerator at all times. Balancing all three is both the challenge (and the massive privilege!) of building a purpose-led organisation.

The goal was never to build a charity people support out of obligation. It was to build a brand and community people genuinely want to be part of - using fashion, sustainability and community as vehicles for real change.

Along the way we’ve learnt that purpose without financial sustainability fades quickly. But sustainability without purpose feels hollow. The magic (and the challenge) lies in building both at the same time.

And in amongst all the balancing, building and problem-solving, the greatest privilege of all is knowing that every bit of momentum created has the power to change lives.

With love,
